July 1- Wilbeth Road

Towpath across Summit Lake at sunset
Grackle near Wilbeth Road
Starting Weather: Mostly Sunny, 70°
Ending Weather:  Partly Cloudy, 68°
Distance Covered: 1.95 mile
Time: 6:39-8:13PM
Today we drove to a trailhead we'd never parked at before.  Although we've walked by Wilbeth Road several times, it had never occurred to us to park at this trailhead and start our hike from here.  What we discovered was a beautiful marshy area full of birds.  There were great blue herons, a green heron, lots of grackles, swallows and other species.  We tried to get in closer to the water, but the brush was so heavy between the water and the trail that it was almost impossible.  Kay even boosted me into a tree for a better angle, but it wasn't much help  We eventually walked north towards Summit Lake.  This is a lovely area with the canal and the boardwalk and the graffiti, which somehow seems to work well here.  As it started getting dark, we drove to the Summit Lake trailhead and took some sunset photos.  Nice!
